SOKENDAI INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM 2009
-CONSTRUCTING SOKENDAI ACADEMIC NETWORKS-
DECEMBER 14 - 17, 2009, HAYAMA, JAPAN
SCOPE
Sokendai was founded in 1988 with the intension of leading a new trend in academic research and fostering creative researchers with broad perspectives.
Since the admission of the first students in 1989, Sokendai has sent 1,265 graduates by now to carriers in universities, research institutions, and industries in Japan and overseas. Many foreign graduates have returned their home countries, and contributed to their society. It is our purpose of this symposium to discuss the international collaboration and seek directions to develop networks of academic communication to Sokendai.

Parallel Sessions I, II, III, IV December 16 13:00-17:30
I. Social works and Brain Science 13:00-17:30
(Chairpersons: Ryusuke Kakigi and Jing Xiang)
One of the most interesting topics of brain science at present is how our brain is activated during daily life, such as language comprehension, face perception and music perception. How our brain determines to go or inhibits to go (no-go) is also interesting. Recent progress of neuroimaging studies makes this difficult project possible, and we will introduce some studies performed by researchers who were graduated from SOKENDAI.

II. Frontier Sciences Explored in Extreme Environments 13:00-17:30
(Introduction, Tadayuki Kodama, NAOJ)
This parallel session of the symposium aims to present our recent activities to peruse frontier sciences that are made possible, and are actually being explored, only in the "Extreme Environments".
The four national institutes of physical sciences that participate in the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI) cooperate on this single key word "extreme environments" and bring together various such projects currently being planned or conducted in these institutes.
The session will consist of seven invited talks on the following themes: biology in Antarctica (National Institute of Polar Research), astronomy at Antarctica and high altitude sites (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan), material science and biology in the zero gravity space (JAXA), psychology in extreme environments (JAXA), and extremely high energy physics (KEK).

IV. Energy and environmental problems from an Asian point of view 13:00-17:30
(Chairperson: Shoichi Okamura)
The environmental problem of the earth is one of the most important issues for human being and we have been discussing them for many decades. Especially the discussions on relations between energy resources and the environmental protection are broadly made not only in academic societies but also in all public environments. Of course, the biggest motivation for this is the hypothesis that the accumulation of carbon dioxide is the major cause of the global warming. From the international point of view, the largest key issue in the discussions of worldwide energy resource problems is the political and economical strategies of big Asian countries which are now in a rapid economical growing phase. Academic researches and discussions in collaborations with those countries would solely make the solutions and proposals for the international energy strategy realistic and reliable. What we will try to make in the Sokendai international symposium are the discussions on these issues from the standpoints of Asian countries and we do not blindly rely on the conventional standpoint of western countries, which has been the basis of discussions for many years. We hope to find out how Sokendai should face to those important problems of human being through the discussions including Asian students who were graduated and are learning in Sokendai.
