The Application Process of Japanese Government Scholarship Students

The Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology [MEXT]) offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities, including SOKENDAI, as graduate-level research students.
Applicants for the MEXT scholarship must be citizens of a country with which Japan has diplomatic relations. Applicants who are Japanese nationals at the time of application are not eligible.

The two ways to apply for the MEXT scholarship are as follows:

The process and selection schedule for the two application routes are quite different. Please click on the relevant link for more details. If you are a MEXT student who is currently studying at another university and planning to enroll in SOKENDAI, you are required to pass SOKENDAI’s general admission entrance examination. For more details, please refer to “General Admission” on our website. In order to receive a MEXT scholarship after enrolling in SOKENDAI, you must apply for scholarship extension and obtain approval from MEXT. The application for extension should be routed through your current university. For more details, please contact the section in charge of this procedure at your university.
