We congratulate Prof. Yoshinori Ohsumi (Professor Emeritus of our University and the National Institute of Basic Biology) for his being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. (Message from President)
Professor Ohsumi, congratulations for your winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine this time. We extend our most sincere congratulations as the faculty members of SOKENDAI and all the students, and appreciate the great encouragement you gave us.
As you took office at the National Institute of Basic Biology as a professor in 1996, you were simultaneously posted as a professor here in SOKENDAI ?The Graduate University of Advanced Studies, and had been conducting wonderful studies on autophagy mechanism, and at the same time, you had been teaching and leading our graduate school students for almost 13 years.
Among the four papers of the key publications for the award this time, one was co-authored by the students of SOKENDAI as the first and second authors, and we are very proud of that.
Your being awarded the Prize also emphasized the importance of advancement and supports for basic academic studies. Researchers’ individual basic studies on the themes that are not considered so important by anyone at the beginning would lead to the critical discoveries on the essence of life and pioneer the great study field, and thereby turning out to elucidate the mechanisms of various diseases and aging.
I, myself, was a professor at The Okazaki National Research Institutes at the same time as you were, and I was living in the same housing building with you a way from my family. And I got to know your personality and attitude toward academic work well. Thus, I am extremely happy for the award you received this time.
I would like to wish you further development of your study and your health, and as SOKENDAI, I intend to further advance the academic education and researches of our country in cooperation with Inter-University Research Institutes and other universities.
