The 6th SOKENDAI Award

SOKENDAI Award is founded in Academic Year 2018 to commend the students who have accomplished their outstanding research and have been conferred their degrees with the excellent doctoral thesis.

The following 4 recipients were selected for the 6th SOKENDAI Awards.

  • Department: Japanese History
  • Doctoral thesis: Early Modern Shrines and People under the Authority of the Royal Court
  • Comment:
    Today, I am honored to receive the SOKENDAI Award at the degree award ceremony of SOKENDAI. It was at the end of the master's course that I came up with the idea of studying "the authority of the royal court in the early modern". After that, while working as a junior high and high school teacher, I belonged to the study group and continued my research. After my retirement, I enrolled the doctoral course to pursue my theme. I enjoyed discussions with my fellow researchers, which was very refreshing for me. There is no retirement age for research, and there are many challenges. At SOKENDAI, you have the freedom not to be bound by any traditions or forms. This freedom and our excitement for the unknown world will open up a new future for research.

KAWAMATA Moto

  • Doctoral thesis: Reconstruction of deglaciation history since the Last Glacial Maximum along the southern Soya Coast, Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica
  • Comment:
    I am very honored to receive this award. Through my research life at SOKENDAI, I have been able to acquire the fundamental research ability as a field scientist in Antarctica. I feel that this is thanks to the encouragement and inspiring instruction from professors in various fields at SOKENDAI. I intend to continue my efforts with the feeling that this is not the end but the beginning. Thank you very much.

    この度は、このような栄誉ある賞を頂戴し光栄に思います。指導教員や基礎生物学研究所の皆様、ならびに共同研究の方々からのご指導・ご支援のおかげだと存じます。また、総研大および基礎生物学研究所の工夫された教育・支援制度と整った研究設備は博士課程で学ぶ上で非常に良い環境でした。この場をお借りして、心より感謝申し上げたいと思います。今後も研究に邁進し、社会に貢献できるようより一層精進して参りたいと思います。

  • Doctoral thesis: Evolution of symbiotic systems in extreme and heterogeneous environments
  • Comment:
    Thank you very much for choosing me for the SOKENDAI Award. I would not have been able to compile my doctoral thesis without the help of my supervisor and many others. In addition, I was greatly helped by the extensive research support system, including support for overseas travel expenses when conducting international joint research. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported me. As a graduate of SOKENDAI and a recipient of the SOKENDAI Award, I will continue to devote myself to my research.
