SOKENDAI Special Researcher (Pioneering Research Type)

In principle, only students in their first or second year of a doctoral course are eligible to apply for the SOKENDAI Special Researcher Program (Pioneering Research Type), but for the fiscal year 2021 only, the eligibility will be expanded to include students in their third year of a doctoral course (however, only those who have more than six months left until the end of the standard course of study as of September 2021 are eligible to apply.)
If you have completed the application form posted before September 16, you may submit it as is.

1. SOKENDAI Student Dispatch Program

This program encourages SOKENDAI students to seek a short-term research opportunity abroad and/or a long-term collaborative research project in and outside Japan that may lead to their career in the future. The program follows the educational goals of SOKENDAI, "advanced specialties and expertise," "broad perspective," and "international competitiveness," and intends to financially support such research opportunities of SOKENDAI students.

2. Internal Joint Advising Program

In this program, students receive joint research guidance from faculty in their own department and faculty in other school/departments.

3. International Degree Program

The international degree programs at SOKENDAI are roughly divided into the following three categories.

  • Double Degree
    Academic degree separately conferred on students who have completed a number of doctoral courses, established by universities under a partnership and satisfied the requirements of each of the universities. Such degrees will be conferred on qualified students by each of the universities.
  • Cotutelle (Dual Degree)
    Based on agreements with overseas universities, Students enrolled as regular students of SOKENDAI and foreign university, meet the requirements for completion of each university, complete a dissertation and pass an examination jointly conducted by both universities, will be granted a single doctoral degree and issued two diplomas from each university.
  • Joint Supervision
    Based on agreements with overseas universities, Students who belong to SOKENDAI or foreign university, enroll as non-regular students with the other university and be supervised with faculty members from both universities. In the case that they complete a dissertation and pass an examination jointly conducted by both universities, they will be granted a doctoral degree from home university and issued a joint certificate that proves program completion.
