Yasu Direct Mail Magazine No. 11 (November 21, 2016)
Produce great resources and assets to your life after graduation!
The heat of summer has passed and cold winter is before us before we know it. I hope that you are applying yourself to your studies and research without catching a debilitating cold.
The most encouraging news I received recently has been without a doubt Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi receiving the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (Note 1). This makes the second SOKENDAI Professor Emeritus to have received a Nobel Prize, the first being Professor Makoto Kobayashi. I expect to have an interview with professor Ohsumi sometime around next February, something I do and you can very much look forward to.
As professor Ohsumi says, most major research (research where new principles are discovered and new fields developed and research that brings about new "things" and "means" that provide great benefits to people's lives) starts with the diligent amassing of research that never sees the light of day based in the free thinking of individual researchers. Those research findings occasionally do not receive the attention and acclaim of people of the time and are often published in journals that do not have a very high impact factor.
Even so, research findings must be put down in papers or books no matter what. As I have said at various opportunities in the past, such as in Yasu Direct Mail Magazine No. 2 and the Autumn 2016 Commencement Ceremony Address (Note 2), this is to fulfill our responsibilities to ourselves, the research community, and taxpayers. So, you must write for yourself, the scientific world, and society, even if it is painful task.
The experience and confidence that come from putting into writing the results from the work you accomplished in itself provides great resources and assets to your life after graduation, regardless of whether you embark on the path of a researcher or on some other path.
In Yasu Direct Mail Magazine No. 5 last year, I told you, "When you publish a paper or book, please contact the central administration office (yasu(at)soken.ac.jp)." While the timing of the request a bit late, this year too I ask you to notify us by December 15 of papers (that are peer reviewed) or books published last year (2015). It would also be appreciated if you could notify us of those published this year as well while they are still fresh in your mind.
That information will be posted on the Graduate University for Advanced Studies Library's Repository, so please send the following information to yasu(at)soken.ac.jp. Only bibliographic information will be included; the paper itself will not be posted.
The following information is required.
- Paper/book title
- Language used
- Full names of all authors (underline the names of SOKENDAI students)
- Name of journal in which it was published
- Volume/number of journal in which it was published
- First and last page number
- Date published (Western calendar)
- E-mail address and contact information of representative author
The information you provide will also be included in Hayama Annual Report. However, please note that this only applies to papers or books in which your affiliation is clearly stated as "SOKENDAI."
I look forward to your achievements. Until next time.
